Note for:   Samuel Daw,    -          Index
Individual note:
Only one reference found to Sam and that is the baptism of his son at Curdworth in 1814. Living at Plank's Brook and working as a forgeman. The forge has been found in the 1841 census but he is not there. The IGI has not produced anything which can be connected.

The following is an extract from " The Birmingham Sites & Monuments Record" by William Dargue in "History of Birmingham on Your Doorstep":

Plants Brook Forge, Walmley Ash, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire, UK.

Plants Brook Forge was originally a corn mill. It was replaced by a forge in 1727.

Joseph Webster used it from 1760 to supplement Penns Mill. However, the forge was out of use by 1859.

In the 1860s the pool was converted to reservoirs with filterbeds on site for public water supply. By 1880 a water-pumping station had been built on the site. The site was abandoned by the end of the 19th century and the reservoirs returned to nature.

During World War 2 the lakes were used to test torpedoes and amphibious vehicles.

In 1978 the pools were drained for landfill. However, vigorous local campaigning led to the City buying the site and it was opened as a local nature reserve in 1985. No visible traces of buildings remain.

Note for:   Jane ,   CIRCA 1763 - AFT 1851         Index
Individual note:
Only one positive reference found to Jane and that is the baptism of her son at Curdworth in 1814. Living at Plank's Brook and her husband working as a forgeman. The forge has been found in the 1841 census but she is not there. The IGI has not produced anything which can be connected.

The only other possible reference is the 1851 census which has a Jane Daws, widow, visiting Joseph & Elizabeth Bates. Her place of origin is "N.K." (very useful !) but one of her hosts (Elizabeth) is from Bedworth, not a million miles from Plank's Brook.
